What is Rebirthing?

Rebirthing is a wholistic method of mind-body-spirit integration originating by Leonard Orr (USA) in the 1970s. Though many techniques are used in Rebirthing, three elements appear to represent its core:

Conscious Connected Breathing

CCB or IEB is a skill that most people can learn in ten 1 to 2 hours breathing sessions. It is the ability to breathe energy as well as air. Orr believes that it is the most valuable self healing ability that humans can learn. This involves merging the inhale with the exhale in a gentle relaxed rhythm in an intuitive way that floods the body with divine energy. This beautiful energy cleans and nourishes the human body physically, emotionally and spiritually. The result of a session is relaxation, peace and joy.

Orr believes further that breathing is the bridge between the visible and the invisible. Our invisible Source is eternal - ever young and healthy. Our visible body is always rejuvenating, purifying, when in touch with the invisible Source. CCB constantly merges our body with its Source - its life giving and life renewing Source. It frees the mind and body of tension and pain - the stresses and strains of every day living. It renews energy. CCB, Orr writes - "is as important to human happiness and health as sunshine."

Breathing is believed to be the basic source of health to the body. Breathing is the primary source of nourishment and elimination. CCB is also a spiritual breathing. It is the skill of breathing energy in a way that eventually gives us awareness of our energy body. Cleaning and balancing our energy is the secret to mental and physical health. That is why Rebirthing has been called an American form of prana yoga. However, Orr writes - "the miracle of IEB is not a religion nor dependent upon belief, faith, nor dogma, nor philosophy, but it is a biological experience of God, that is available to everybody."

The method has become known as Rebirthing because we learn to breathe at birth. Some people actually have vivid recall of their birth. That is why the method is so appropriate for those who suffered from a serious birth trauma, and who intuitively feel that the birth trauma might have affected their current functioning. This is a method  that can be especially beneficial for people with addictions, cancer, ulcers, anxiety, psychosomatic tension, etc.

Spiritual Purification Techniques

Although CCB often does induce miraculous and instantaneous healing of all kinds of diseases, it is not a cure all. Conscious breathing should be supplemented by other techniques of spiritual purification like daily bathing, diet changes and fasting, exercise, and fire purification.

Control of Mind

In Rebirthing we believe that mind is an extremely powerful tool and that the quality of our thinking has a direct impact on our health and functioning. That is why different techniques of control of mind are recommended such as: meditation, contemplative prayer, working with affirmations, positive thinking, reading inspiring literature, etc. It is crucial that the person receiving CCB practices the techniques of purification and mind control between the sessions.
